The year 2001 marks the tenth anniversary of RODOVID. We
began publishing in 1991 immediately upon the relaxation in
censorship and communist party control of print media. The
first issue of the journal was published in a small town in
central Ukraine, and soon after the staff moved permanently
to Kyiv. Throughout its ten-year history, the staff at RODOVID
has jealously guarded its private ownership as well as its
unbiased concerned with the cultural history of Ukraine.

RODOVID's history reflects many of the ups and downs of
Ukrainian history of the last ten years, but through it all we
have worked with some of the most important scholars and
cultural activists in the country. The result has been
seventeen issues of the journal as well as twelve books.

In this celebratory year we are adding another activity, an art
gallery that reflects the rich cultural heritage of Ukrainians.
The collection featured in the gallery includes items from the
eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth centuries: icons, naive
art, embroidery of various kinds (carpets, tablecloths,
ceremonial towels), jewelry, and other. Several items from
the collection can be viewed on our website.

RODOVID works with organizations and institutions of
various kinds on specific research or exhibition projects.
These include the National Museum in L'viv, the Ivan
Honchar Museum, the Center for the Study of Oral History
and Culture in Kyiv, the film studio PATERYK, and the
National Commission on Questions of the Return of
Cultural Treasures to Ukraine, under the auspices of the
Cabinet of Ministers of the government of Ukraine. We believe
a worthwhile goal is to broaden co-operation among these
and other institutions in the development of a national
Ukrainian "Smithsonian Institution," one result of which would
be to strengthen scholarly research and to better project into
the world knowledge of the wealth that is the cultural history
of Ukraine.

2001-го року РОДОВІД відзначає своє десятиліття. Перше число РОДОВОДУ було видруковане 1991-го року в Смілянській районній друкарні. Ми розпочали свою справу відразу, як тільки впала завіса-заборона на інші видання, окрім партійно-комсомольських. РОДОВІД як культурологічний часопис і як одноіменне приватне підприємство всі роки відданий справі дослідження й публікації історії української культури та культурної спадщини.

Шлях та хронологія РОДОВОДУ були багаті на надзвичайні події, навіть епохальні зміни в житті України та українців, на зустрічі й співпрацю з яскравими особистостями, професійними дослідниками і просто цікавими людьми.

... Видрукувано сімнадцять чисел РОДОВОДУ, понад 10 книг, проведені конференції, виставки проекти усної історії...

Але в рік першого десятиліття хочеться говорити про нові амбітні плани й проекти. РОДОВІД намагається поряд із студіями історичної культурної спадщини та сучасного культурного процесу, друком монографічних досліджень, каталогів, альбомів, поширити виставкову діяльність як в Україні, так і за кордоном. Ця ідея підштовхнула до створення і відкриття РОДОВІД-галереї. Дві основні мети має відкиття галереї - виставкову та колекційну. До того часу РОДОВІД зібрав чималу колекцію українського мистецтва - ікони, давні тканини (килими, рушники, скатерки, ін.), золотарство та прикраси - частину збірки можна побачити на нашому сайті у розділі галерея.

РОДОВІД співпрацює з іншими установами, зайнятими культурними науковими проектами як Національний Музей у Львові, Музей Івана Гончара, Центр Досліджень Усної Історії та Культури, Національною Комісією з питань повернення культурних цінностей в Україну, приватними колекціонерами, ін. Було б знаменито, аби ми спільними зусиллями, розширивши коло зацікавлених, розбудували український Smithsonian Institutions з постійним надзавданням - досліджувати й пропагувати культурні цінності України.
