(English and Ukrainian)
Lidia Lykhach and Mykola Kornienko
This is a beautiful album that would make a wonderful present for
anyone interested in Ukraine and Ukrainian culture. It contains
nearly 200 different cottage icon subjects from villages in central
regions around the towns Cherkasy, Chyhyryn, Kaniv, and Uman. These
icons span nearly three hundred years with the majority from the
nineteenth century. Icons such as these formerly adorned virtually
every village home. They were painted on wooden boards or on linen
by non-professional village masters known as bohomazy.
The research in this publication is the most detailed ever presented
on Ukrainian naive iconography. The book is in two languages, English
and Ukrainian, making it uniquely accessible to readers. The detailed
descriptive list of icons in the back of the book is in three languages:
English, Ukrainian and French.
