Zinaida Tarakhan-Bereza
The history of the effort to return the remains of the Ukrainian
poet Taras Shevchenko from Russia in the decades after his death
in 1861 and the struggle to provide his grave with a suitable memorial,
resulting in the great monument in Kaniv overlooking the Dnipro.
The major figures in this effort are vividly described, including
some of the leading lights of the Ukrainian intelihentsia
at the turn of the century; amply illustrated with nearly 400 photographs
and paintings from the time.

Zinaida Tarakhan-Bereza
is a doctoral candidate in philology, author of nearly 300 articles
as well as two books about Shevchenko. She works in the National Shevchenko
Museum in Kaniv.
