The topic of this monograph by Andriy Nahachewsky is dance. On the basis of his description and analysis of recreational dance, the author examines the cultural context of Ukrainian Canadians, tracing their intertwining ties with the land of their ancestors and their new country.

Recreational Dance of Ukrainian Canadians opens the series "Ukrainian Ethnography and Culture" that was initiated in 2001 by the Huculak Chair of Ukrainian Culture and Ethnography at the University of Alberta (Edmonton, Canada), the Institute of Ethnic Studies of the Ukrainian National Academy of Sciences (Lviv, Ukraine) and RODOVID Publishers (Ky¿v, Ukraine).

about the author

Andriy Nahachewsky is a professor of the Department of Modern Languages and Cultural Studies of the University of Alberta (Edmonton, Canada). He holds the Huculak Huculak Chair of Ukrainian Culture and Ethnography and heads the newly created Canadian Center of Ukrainian Culture and Ethnography.
Andriy performed with the Ukrainian dance companies Yevshan (Saskatoon), Festival Ensemble (Toronto), Cheremosh and Shumka (Edmonton). In 1980, 1992 and 1995 he studied dance in Ukraine. His book Recreational Dance of Ukrainian Canadians grew out of his M.A. thesis, written under the supervision of Dr. Bohdan Medwidsky in the University of Alberta. He is presently working on a book about "folk", "ethnic", "national" and "character" dance.
