Based on extensive fieldwork undertaken in 1993-95 by ten researchers
in central and eastern Ukraine, this study focuses on the changes
in civil and cultural institutions in the 1920-30s that were a result
of the socialization and collectivization of agriculture. The scope
of the books includes the Great Famine of 1932-33, repression of
farmers, suppression of village cultural and ritual life, suppression
of religious culture. Half of the book consists of interviews conducted
with villagers who survived the years in question.
about the author
William Noll holds a
Ph.D. in ethnomusicology from the University of Washington and has
conducted research among village musicians in Poland, Ukraine and
Moldova.
