A special issue on the kobzary, lirnyky, startsi, and starchykhy - blind minstrels or village street musicians (instruments kobza and lira ) and blind or lame street singers. Articles include: a description of the life of a Ukrainian kobzar living in Russia in the eighteenth century, an interpretation of the role and moral authority of blind minstrels in the village before collectivization, the importance of Opanas Slast'on as a researcher, interpretations of lira and kobza repertories, the lira in Belorus, bandurists of the twentieth century, letters of Hnat Khotkevych, and a previously unpublished article on startsi in Chernihiv (fieldwork) by Borys Luhovs'kyi from 1926.
