This exhibition, The Colors and Melodies of Ukrainian Christmas, is intent to promote the Ukrainian culture and to support the idea of private collecting and philanthropy. In 2006, it will be held throughout Ukraine, each time displaying new exhibits to mark a certain national holiday. It consists of about two hundred art pieces representing the calendar cycle of Ukrainians from different regions. The President and his family took part in a ceremony to open a Christmas exhibition of old things and rarities from private collections of Victor Yushchenko, Petro Honchar, Lidia Lykhach, Oleh Pinchuk, and Vasyl Vovkun. “This collection represents our history in different dimensions: embroidered shirts, carpets, icons, church sculptures, or folk clothes. I think most of the things we see here today will never be recreated by our generation,” Yushchenko said, noting that by preserving this history we would be able to pass it to our children to show them “Ukraine where our grandfathers and great grandfathers used to live.” “This is a tiny but miraculous world which was traditional for our ancestors.” “I think each visitor will be kinder and happier after seeing it,” he opined. The Head of State also said he hoped the exposition “will travel around the cities of Ukraine” to stimulate other cultural initiatives in the regions. “I want it to be conducted all around the country to make us see Ukraine united,” he stressed. Yushchenko thanked Rodovid-Gallery, Ivan Honchar Center of Folk Culture and Ukraine 3000 for organizing the event, and wished those present a Happy New Year and a Merry Christmas.
